WHY ENROL AT SPOTSWOOD COLLEGE…
Spotswood College is proudly and confidently Co-Educational. At Spotswood College, the education of boys and girls together is seen as the most healthy, natural and normal setting for learning. It is our way of recognizing the equality of opportunities for sexes. We provide a broad range of activities and experiences tailored to meet the developmental needs of the widest possible range of individuals.
The achievement of our students in all aspects of our innovative programmes is testimony to the success of our philosophy and our systems.
Because we are co-educational we can focus on meeting the developmental needs of each student as an individual within a natural social context.
Recent research clearly backs our stance. There is no evidence girls are disadvantaged by co-educational schools. In fact the research indicates girls do better in all aspects including personal self confidence and academic success.
The evidence for boys is quite clear. Boys do better academically and socially in a co-educational setting. Boys also report greater enjoyment and higher self esteem as well as exhibiting fewer sexist attitudes.
There is no greater testament to the value of co-education than the success of our students in the tertiary and work settings. The world beyond school is co-educational and students from Spotswood College are highly regarded in both settings for their maturity, their study habits and their balanced approach to life.
Our Vision Statement is clear evidence of our philosophy “Spotswood College will be a quality school valued by its community and providing the best possible learning opportunities for its students”. We believe in ensuring that students aim to achieve their personal best academically and that all students strive for excellence. Our academic record speaks for itself and our students attain very high levels in Tertiary Education. Our Year 10 Achievement Certificate is assisting our students to develop attitudes and work habits which will stand them in good stead in the Senior school. In 2005 we are providing a “Learning to Learn” programme for senior students designed to better prepare them for NCEA success.
Culturally our school has a fine record in Shakespearean Drama, Drama, Debating, Speech competition, Jazz bands and Concert bands. Spotswood College is currently developing Theatre Sports. We have strong traditions in all these areas. We have a sister city arrangement with Mishima in Japan and a group of students travelled there in 2004 and another group will travel in 2007. Similarly our bands travelled to the Melbourne Band Festival in August 2004. Our Kapa Haka group is strong and well organized. Its winning of the Taranaki Manawatu Wanganui Regional competition is nothing short of excellent. We staged a major School Production “Back to the 80′s” in 2004, and will stage another in 2006. We entered Stage Challenge in 2005. We offer Dance in Year 9 and 10 and Drama at all Levels.
In the sporting realm we pride ourselves in offering students a wide range of opportunities. Our Sports Co-ordinator ensures that our rates of participation are high. We excel in Volleyball with both our girls and boys teams being Taranaki Regional winners in 2005. We have achieved outstanding results in Beach Volleyball with Peter Allemann and Steven Davison being the New Zealand Senior Beach Volleyball Champions. Our Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Cricket, Basketball and In-Line Hockey teams have all achieved success in 2005. In 2005 all four Boys Rugby teams were in the Taranaki semi finals and our U15 Team won the C Grade Championship for 2005.
We have a well established and highly regarded International Students programme with twenty eight students in 2005. Our school prides itself in caring for our International Students and ensuring that they are well catered for in Home Stay situations and in being integrated into the wider life of the school.
Spotswood College is a very modern school, with first class facilities. Our Technology, Art, Physical Education, Music, Drama, Science, Mathematics and English facilities are superb. They are well supported with three modern computer labs and over two hundred computers. Our well equiped Gym is enhanced with a range of sporting fields and courts. A special recent addition is our Beach Volleyball Court.
